EVAPORATION AND ICEMELTING: TWO MAIN SOLUTIONS

Introduction

Excessive evaporation, algae, ice formation, heat loss and water fowl habitation are common problems experienced by industrial water and wastewater ponds, tanks, and storage vessels.

Significant water losses resulting in increasing the concentration of dissolved salts, metals and other contaminants in the reduced water volume can be caused by evaporation. Make-up water demand is also increased by evaporation.

Severe reduction of treatment efficiency is a direct effect of reduced volume and hydraulic residence time due to evaporation and ice formation. Decrease in biological activity rates because of excessive heat loss can highly degrade treatment capability. An excessive amount of nutrients due to waterfowl habitation lead to algae formation and odor generation.

Solution

By eliminating thermal stratification, ADS fine bubble aeration provides an effcient mixing which reduce evaporation and ice formation. The aeration systems also maintain adequate oxygen levels and mixing to prevent stagnant conditions and to reduce algae growth.

Bird Ball™ cover system provide an insulated cover system for ponds or tanks reducing phenomenom such as evaporation, ice formation, algae, and heat loss. Algae growth and evaporation to the atmosphere is controlled by eliminating direct sunlight exposure to the water surface. The effect of wind on the water surface is also reduced by a Bird Ball™ cover system, diminuishing the effects of evaporation. The insulated cover reduces heat loss from the water surface, and also reduces the ice formation potential.

Ponds and tanks does not represent potential habitat for waterfowl when a Bird Ball™ cover system is used. Furthermore, bird fatalities in contaminated ponds are reduced and nutrient concentrations minimized.

Result

High oxygen transfer, grid-coverage mixing, and easy installion in both new and existing facilities is provided by the ADS fine bubble installation. Bird Balls™ constitute a cost-effective, low maintenance alternative to floating membrane covers, structural domes, and other insulated cover systems.
