Faculative lagoon installations
have been recognized throughout the world as the most economical solution
for wastewater treatment. Thanks to its low construction
and operating costs with minimal operator attention, lagoon systems
have become the preferred process solution for secondary and tertiary
treatment where land availability and proper topography allows it.
With ever more stringent effluent limitations, conventional lagoons
are threatened with extinction. PNW and its partners have developed
a host of new technologies that address many of the process limitations
associated with conventional lagoons.

ADS and PNW have been developing innovative process design and hardware
solutions since 1960 to ensure their customer always get the best
technologies when it comes to lagoon type applications.
PNW lagoon optimization
PNW wastewater systems can meet all
existing or proposed waste effluent Regulations very cost-effectively.
By identifying the most costly components of a wastewater treatment
system and optimizing them, PNW can provide some of the most energy
efficient and low maintenance wastewater treatment systems in the
industry.
Operation and maintenance cost of conventionnal wastewater treatment
plant are driven by 4 main factors: Aeration
& mixing Sludge
hauling Maintenance Personnel
cost & training
AERATION
& MIXING
Efficiency of the aeration equipment is the key to outstanding
energy savings. By selecting ADS® fine bubble aeration,
PNW proposes a system with an exceptionnal oxygen transfer (3%
/ foot of water depth) and excellent grid coverage. In fact,
the combination of small bubble size with a unique
diffusion pattern leads to the lowest energy requirement
in the industry.
SLUDGE
HAULING
Sludge handling represents a major expense of running activated
sludge, SBR or MBR systems. PNW aerated lagoons are designed
to work from 10 to 20 years sludge free.
MAINTENANCE
PNW systems have only 1 moving part, the blower/compressor.
The basic O and M for all components is less than one to two
hours per day. Unlike conventional activated sludge technologies,
day-to-day management of the system is not required. Operators
need only
to confirm proper operations of the blower.
The aeration equipment itself is designed to last a minimum
of 10 years, with systems lasting as long as 25 years.
PERSONNEL
COST & TRAINING
Since these systems are based on the lagoon treatment process,
there is no extra training required. When a system is installed,
a 4 hour training period is provided to the operators. PNW instalaltions
are entirely automated and run 24/7.
When & Why should I optimize?
Lagoons can be optimized for different reasons:
Update
existing lagoons Increase
performance Increase
aeration efficiency Eliminate
slugde handling by implementing long term sludge management Reduce
maintenance Reduce
land requirements
It is never too early to upgrade your installation. In fact, 90% of
our projects save between 50% and 85% on electricity cost.
It is thus often possible to upgrade existing lagoon systems for no
money down, the payment being based on the energy
savings made.
Because our installations are the most energy efficient in the industry,
our clients have also access to public and private grant money, reducing
the return on investment to generally less than 3 to 5 years at current
electrical costs.
